Pilates mats - what type is best?

5 Dec 2017

If Pilates mat workouts are a regular part of your fitness regime, it makes good sense to ensure your body is being supported by the best foundation. But, how do you choose the right mat?

Yoga mats are more common than Pilates mats and as such end up in most shopping trolleys. However, these are generally designed with great grip for standing yoga poses, but not enough padding for the array of spinal work that Pilates involves.

Thicker is better in Pilates and a smoother surface is more appropriate than one with plenty of grip. Pilates requires a comfortable and supportive base to cushion your spine and joints whereas yoga classes require a surface that helps you to balance.

A Pilates mat provides the best support if it is around 1.25cm or thicker. In comparison, a yoga mat only needs to be around half a centimetre in thickness.
